Penfield Hots – Review
I recently had the chance to check out Penfield Hots and their plate offering. Before we get started I want to mention that this hots place was very difficult to find. You have to navigate through a parking lot laden with pot-holes to find it. For 9.50$ you can get the “Rubbish Plate”, which of course is their version of the garbage plate. I should mention that this place is cash ONLY. It always strikes me as odd when a restaurant only accepts cash in this day in age. I can’t help but feel like they’re doing something nefarious. Maybe it’s me, but in 2018 it isn’t difficult to get a square or one of those tablet things. I was a bit put off by the fact that they had only one person working in the whole establishment. That said he managed the orders and cooking duties well and the plate came out in a reasonable amount of time. Let’s break it down:
HEALTH INSPECTION NOTES:
Although they had no critical violations they did have five “non-critical” violations. I’d keep an eye on this place as historically they haven’t had the best track record.
Meat (Cheese burgers): 4
The burger was well cooked although it was a bit on the thin side.
Meat Sauce: 4
The meat sauce was good; it had a nice kick to it although it was a bit greasy.
Potato Side (Home Fries): 3
As is becoming the norm, this was a rather lackluster/pedestrian affair.
Mac Salad: 2
The mac salad was bland; and oddly, warm. When the mac salad is sub-par it takes me out of the optimal plate experience.
Bread: 3
The bread was a bit stale and chewy. Not a great experience.
Portion Control/Composition: 3
As I mentioned earlier, the mac salad was the real weak link in this particular plate. Because mac salad is such a large part of the plate experience it really impacts the overall plate. Additionally the plate was rather greasy. All-in-all a rather sub-par plate experience.
