McCann’S Local Meats – Review II
It isn’t difficult to convince me to stop into McCann’s for a plate. It’s close to where I live, and it’s arguably one of the best plates you can get. What is difficult is trying to assign a numerical rating to a culinary masterpiece. But fear not dear reader, I have accepted the mission and bring you yet another plate review. As of May 2021, this plate will run you $18.36 (up from $17.28 in 2019). I should say that this is STILL quite expensive for a plate. This review is going to be a bit tougher than reviews I’ve done in the past. At this price point the food should be orders of magnitude better than the competitors. Let’s find out if it was:
HEALTH INSPECTION NOTES:
Once again, I wasn’t able to find any information related to their restaurant in the health inspection notes. I searched a variety of different ways and couldn’t seem to come up with anything tangible. Surely they must be getting inspections, but perhaps it’s from another department? Any insight into this would be helpful.
Meat (Cheeseburgers): 4
Make no mistake about it, the burger here is good. Was it the best I’ve ever had? No. Perhaps it’s unfair but at this price point, and based on the fact that it’s a butcher, these should be the best burgers in the city. There’s no excuse for anything less. The burgers didn’t taste like they were appropriately seasoned, but perhaps they’re not supposed to be? I’ll also mention that I’m not sure what type of cheese they use, but I wasn’t a fan.
Meat Sauce: 5
The meat sauce is on the mild side. That said, it’s spiced very well and I quite liked it despite the fact that it wasn’t “spicy”. I would like to see them be a bit less miserly with the meat sauce in the future.
Potato Side (French fries): 5
These fries are sent from the heavens. They are truly among the best fries I’ve ever had and easily the best in Rochester.
Mac Salad: 4
The complaints I have about the mac salad haven’t changed since the last time I did a review here.
Bread: N/A
I did not receive bread with my order.
Portion Control/Composition: 4
When you combine the issues I mentioned above, I can only give them a four for the composition section. In the future I’d like to see a bit more meat sauce, and less raw veggies in the mac salad. Additionally, a change of cheese and more seasoning on the burgers would go a long way in changing my opinion on this plate.
Overall Score: 4.4
The quality of the McCann’s plate is extremely high, unparalleled even. Everything tastes homemade and is quite good. You can quite literally taste the difference, and it makes for a very pleasant culinary experience. The price is high, but the food is good.
